Conscientious Objectors and their Supporters (COS): Santa Barbara, California Peace Sign

Who We Are

Conscientious Objectors and their Supporters (COS) is a local group affiliated with the Central Committee for Conscientious Objectors (CCCO) and the local Quaker (Friends) and Unitarian faith communities.

Our primary goal is to provide CO counseling -- in person in local schools and universities and via a telephone hot-line -- and to arrange counter-recruitment activities, offer counseling training, and coordinate with other peace-related groups in the Santa Barbara area.

    Please Volunteer to Help Us!

We need volunteers to help with disseminating information and in concrete counter-recruitment activities at UCSB, SBCC, and in local schools. If you can spare a few hours and want to have a positive impact in the world, please send email to Stephen Pope (stp@create.ucsb.edu).

    Our Press Release

    January 10, 2003

    For Immediate Release

Citizens of the tricounty area will now have a resource for counseling and education on issues and concerns about military service, draft registration, Conscientious Objector status, the Delayed Entry Program, and military recruitment. These new services are provided by members of the newly formed peace group called Conscientious Objectors and their Supporters (COS).

COS began in October 2002 with a group of Conscientious objectors and those interested in alternatives to military service. Its mission is to provide the above services to young people and their loved ones and to provide a place for them to talk about moral issues regarding military participation. They will also be providing speakers and educational programs for various groups in the community. COS will be networking with other peace groups in the community aligning themselves with the growing movement to find alternatives to war and education for peace.

COS members will be members of a panel discussion at the Peace Congress On January 18th. The panel will meet at 1:00 p.m. at the Unitarian Society at 1535 Santa Barbara Street in Santa Barbara. You can also talk further with members and receive more information about the group at the COS table at the Unitarian Society.

Free and confidential counseling is available at the Multicultural Center at the University of California at Santa Barbara (UCSB) on Mondays and Fridays from 12:00 - 2:00 p.m. for the Winter Quarter. Counseling is also offered by telephone at (805) 696-6986. Visit the COS website at: http://create.ucsb.edu/COS
